To investigate whether laser acupuncture is efficacious in children with headache and if active laser treatment is superior to placebo laser treatment in a prospective, randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled trial of low level laser acupuncture in 43 children (mean age (SD) 12.3 (+/-2.6) years) with headache (either migraine (22 patients) or tension type headache (21 patients)). Patients were randomized to receive a course of 4 treatments over 4 weeks with either active or placebo laser. The treatment was highly individualised based on criteria of Traditional Chinese medicine (TCM). The primary outcome measure was a difference in numbers of headache days between baseline and the 4 months after randomization. Secondary outcome measures included a change in headache severity using a 10cm Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) for pain and a change in monthly hours with headache. Measurements were taken during 4 weeks before randomization (baseline), at weeks 1-4, 5-8, 9-12 and 13-16 from baseline. The mean number of headaches per month decreased significantly by 6.4 days in the treated group (p<0.001) and by 1.0 days in the placebo group (p=0.22). Secondary outcome measures headache severity and monthly hours with headache decreased as well significantly at all time points compared to baseline (p<0.001) and were as well significantly lower than those of the placebo group at all time points (p<0.001). We conclude that laser acupuncture can provide a significant benefit for children with headache with active laser treatment being clearly more effective than placebo laser treatment.

Electro-Acupuncture of Tsusanli and Shangchuhsu Regulates Gastric Activity Possibly Through Mediation of the Vagus-Solotary Complex

BACKGROUND/AIMS: Acupuncture has been reportedly used to treat gastrointestinal diseases, however, its precise mechanism remains unknown. METHODOLOGY: In our study, the effects and mechanism of electro-acupuncture (EA) at Tsusanli (ST 36), Shangchuhsu (ST 37) on regulation of gastric activity were observed. RESULTS: EA at Tsusanli showed that gastric electric change was the most obvious, with significantly higher frequency and wave amplitude compared with that of the Shangchuhsu group and other groups. EA at Shangchuhsu demonstrated that the change of gastric electric level was much higher than that of the non-acupoint group and control group. After bilateral vagotomy, Tsusanlis was electro-acupunctured, the changes of electro-gastric graph (EGG) weren't significant with the control group. The frequency of electro-physiological activity in nucleus of solitary tract (NTS) and dorsal motor nucleus of the vagus nerve (DMV) in the Tsusanli group was markedly increased compared with that in the other group. Fos and GFAP expression in NTS and DMV in the Tsusanli group was significantly higher than that in other groups and control group. The results have indicated that EA at Tsusanli and Shangchuhsu cannot only regulate gastric activity, but also activate neurons and astrocytes in NTS and DMV. The effects on regulation and activation of EA at Tsusanli were very obvious. CONCLUSIONS: Our study suggests that this electroacupuncture regulation of gastric activity may partially depend upon integrated nerve pathway and related central neurons and astrocytes in the vagus-solitary complex.

Fast Repair of Oxidative DNA Damage by Phenylpropanoid Glycosides and Their Analogues

The repair activities and reaction mechanisms of phenylpropanoid glycosides (PPGs) and their analogues, isolated from Chinese folk medicinal herbs, towards oxidative DNA damage were studied with pulse radiolytic technique. On pulse irradiation of nitrogen-saturated 4 mM poly C aqueous solution containing one of the tested polyphenols, 40 mM K(2)S(2)O(8) and 200 mM t-BuOH, the transient absorption spectrum of the oxidative radical of poly C decays with the concurrent formation of the phenoxyl radical of the tested polyphenols within several tens of microseconds after the electron pulse irradiation. The result indicated that there was a repair reaction between oxidative radical of poly C and the tested polyphenols. The repair activities also were observed for the tested polyphenols towards the radical cations of single-stranded DNA (ssDNA) and double-stranded DNA (dsDNA). The rate constants were determined to be 3.7-6.4 x 10(9), 4.8-5.5 x 10(8) and 8.8-10.3 x 10(8) M(-1).sec(-1) for the repair reactions of oxidative radical of poly C and radical cations of ssDNA and dsDNA, respectively. The result of this study together with those of our previous studies demonstrates that PPGs and their analogues can fast repair not only the damage of deoxynucleoside and deoxynucleotide but also the damage of integral DNA, with the latter being closer to a cellular condition.
