Q: Is it safe to have an acupuncture treatment
while I am breastfeeding? A:
There is nothing that contraindicates acupuncture when breastfeeding. At the
Tao of Wellness Clinic, we work with women trying to get pregnant,
throughout pregnancy, and while breastfeeding. There are certain points that
are cautioned or contraindicated during pregnancy, but these are strongly
noted and any licensed acupuncturist will be aware of them.
Some acupuncturists may want to prescribe an herbal formula for you in
addition to your acupuncture treatment. There are some formulas that would
not be appropriate when breastfeeding and you should be sure that your
acupuncturist is aware that you are nursing.
Q: Can acupuncture help relieve the pain of a
ganglion cyst?
A:
The best treatment for this type of cyst is deep massage with the intent of
bursting the cyst. It is very intense but keeps the cyst away for extended
periods of time, though not permanently. Acupuncture can relieve some of the
discomfort if a cyst is causing pain and can even shrink and/or soften the
cyst, but it is unlikely to completely dissolve the mass.
